"Necessity is the Mother of Invention" is a viewing booth. A person enters to view a painting at the far end of the booth that depicts a landscape with an electrical substation in the foreground. Behind the scene is a sky made of stretched, translucent fabric. The sky is backlit. Over the course of 4.5 minutes the lighting in the sky and on the landscape shifts from nearly dark to the light of early dawn, then slowly back againn to darkness. A viewer hears a slow clicking as the light moves through its 4-minutes cycle.
